The mission of The Great Indian Sahitya Collective is to preserve the richly variegated contours of literature in local Indian languages. By motivating younger demographics to engage with their literary heritage, the project seeks to nurture the intellectually stimulating habit of reading among school students as a way of honing their imaginative instincts and creative skills.
We seek to implement a multi-pronged approach for this — which includes authoring and donating original children’s books on themes like caste, gender, and mental health; launching an article series to draw attention to diverse literary works across the subcontinent; and distributing literary works by Indian writers such as Munshi Premchand, Mannu Bhandari, and Suryakant Tripathi Nirala to local schools to facilitate a contextually-informed understanding of their society in students from underserved communities. The Great Indian Sahitya Collective aims to nurture vibrant reading habits among this demographic through the donation of books highlighting key themes in Indian society to construct libraries in public schools.
