Sumira Jain is a high school student at the Modern School, Barakhamba Road in New Delhi. Intrigued by socio-cultural phenomena and political processes, Sumira is particularly interested in art and the politics of gender and culture, and has honed this passion via participation in the ‘Culture, Arts, and Social Movements,’ summer course at Emory College and presently, the 'Introduction to Political Theory' course at UCLA Summer Sessions. Having found respite in literature since her childhood, she started The Great Indian Sahitya Collective in an attempt to inculcate an interest in India’s rich heritage and literature while simultaneously exploring socially and culturally relevant narratives through original children’s books.
These interests also prompted her to become a member of the Debate and MUN teams of her school, where she partakes in hours of peer discussion to hone her prowess at articulation as well as critical thinking abilities. In a similar vein, her membership in the school’s writing and art clubs has stimulated her to expand her creative horizons by immersing herself in writing and the visual arts, and she recently authored a short original book titled ‘The Taliban Raiders’, inspired by the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. Sumira is also deeply passionate about social service and is an active member of her school’s Interact Club, and was awarded the Silver Award as part of the Tiranga Badge Awards for her service with the club. Sumira has represented her school in basketball competitions including the All India IPSC Basketball Tournament where her team placed second in April 2023, and tournaments at Carmel Convent School. Based on this experience, she was selected as Captain of the U-19 Girls' Basketball team in July 2024.
